Can Vitamin-D deficiency cause Erectile Dysfunction?

3 minutes

Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to attain and maintain erections required for satisfactory sex and it is multifactorial. It can be caused by neurogenic, psychogenic, hormonal, and vascular factors.

Most often Erectile Dysfunction is the risk factor of Cardiovascular Disease and a powerful indicator of asymptomatic cardiovascular disease.

What is Vitamin-D and How is it produced?

Vitamin-D is a steroid hormone produced in the skin when the skin is exposed to sunlight and 80% of the D vitamin present in the body is produced by sunlight.

How Vitamin-D effects Erectile Dysfunction?

As we already know Cardiovascular disease is one of the main risk factors of Erectile Dysfunction, deficiency of Vitamin-D is associated with cardiovascular risks. These cardiovascular risks are the causes of Erectile Dysfunction. Let’s know more about the cardiovascular risks caused by the deficiency of Vitamin-D.

  1. Arterial Calcification

Arterial Calcification is the reduction of elasticity in the arterial vessels which can affect the flow of blood and is inversely related to Vitamin-D and the lower the Vitamin-D the chances of Arterial Calcification increases.

  1. Diabetes Miletus

As we already know diabetes is one of the risk factors of Erectile Dysfunction.

The sugar levels are lower in summer and higher in winter. Recently a study has shown that Diabetes is related to sunlight and Vitamin -D.

Exposing to sunlight and taking Vitamin-D supplements can help in diabetes and reduce the chances of Erectile Dysfunction.

  1. Hypertension

Almost 68% of men with hypertension experience erectile dysfunction.

A direct relationship exists among hypertension, sunlight exposure, and stroke; the incidence of hypertension is considerably higher in winter than in summer. One study of elderly hypertensive subjects showed that blood pressure levels averaged 165/90 in winter but 134/74 in the summer, and both stroke and heart attack rates doubled in winter.

Hypertension also follows the same pattern in children. Sunlight from sun lamps also effectively treats hypertension.

Exposing to sunlight can reduce the risk of hypertension and by decreasing the risk of Erectile Dysfunction.

  1. Inflammation in the vascular endothelium

Erectile Dysfunction is directly related to the inflammation in the vascular system.

Vitamin-D inhibits the inflammation in the vascular system whereas a deficiency in Vitamin-D promotes the inflammation in the vascular system which can be a risk factor for Erectile Dysfunction.

Conclusion

Vitamin-D might not be the direct reason for causing Erectile Dysfunction but it affects your cardiovascular system which is a risk factor for Erectile Dysfunction.
